The world has gotten noisy. All of us hear the clamor of voices and bells and vibrations all day. The cell phone rings, the smart watch vibrates and the computer chimes. Social media pops up. Our thoughts race. What are we fixing for supper? What errands do we need to run over our lunch hour There is always something fighting for our time.
There is a select number of people who hear those same distractions, but they also hear another voice. Their hearing and hearts are in tune to the voices of children. The children who have been hurt or abused. They have a keen sense of listening. Others may hear a small whimper, but for those select few, they are able to hear the cries, they feel the tears and they have a sense of urgency to do something about it. When others run away and refuse to get involved, these people run towards the child. We give accolades to sports heroes and movie stars and yet, the people that rush in to stand up for a child get very little recognition and yet, they are the true heroes. These people are called CASA volunteers.
I have been working with CASA volunteers for 24 years. They all have one thing in common. They light up when they see children. They come alongside them in their most difficult times and walk with them. They advocate for them and there is a fire inside them that will fight for them to be safe because at the very least, they deserve that.
They come from all parts of life, some are retired, some are working, some are shy, and some are bold, but they all inspire me every day to be better. I truly am in awe of these selfless heroes. I have seen so many children end up with a better future because they have one person that believes in them.
Reading the stories of human suffering for this long takes a toll but knowing the people who make such a difference evens it out. There has never been a time when CASA volunteers have been needed more. The cases are harder, the fight is tougher, but we must not let our guard down. We must keep bringing up the plight of abused children and I know a whole group of people that do just that every day. I commend each and everyone of you for your character, commitment and willingness to put your heart on the line. I have never met a greater group of people and we are forever grateful.
