Meet Our CASA Volunteer: Kara Englert

Kara discusses below reasons for becoming a CASA Volunteer and what motivates her as a CASA Volunteer.

  1. Why did you decide to become a CASA?
A former student and his CASA volunteers inspired me to become a CASA. This student went through many housing changes and had no biological family in his life. His CASA volunteers were his constants who he could always depend on. I wanted to be that one constant for a child.
  2. What do you like best about being a CASA?
I like the time I get to spend with my CASA kiddo. He is honest and has become very open and trusting in our conversations. He enjoys and is thankful for the most simple things, like shopping for a geranium or picking up a pop and a snack at the grocery store. I appreciate knowing that my time and opinions are valued by all of the agencies working on his case.
  3. How many CASA cases have you had?
I’ve been on my first and only case for close to one year.
  4. Tell us one of your most meaningful experiences as a CASA?
When I first started my case it was hard for me to read my CASA kiddo. I couldn’t tell if he enjoyed our time together. Then, one day he called and asked how soon I could schedule our next visit. That phone call meant so much to me!
  5. What has being a CASA taught you?
Being a CASA has taught me so much. There are so many challenges and struggles facing families and children today. Being a CASA has reminded me that everybody goes through hard times and needs a helping hand and smiling face in their corner. Being a CASA has also given me a different lens as a teacher. It’s stressed the importance of building trusting connections with students.
  6. What keeps you motivated as a CASA?
Reminding myself that I am my kiddo’s one constant in his life right now keeps me motivated.
