Meet Marie Mena – CASA Volunteer
Tell us a short snippet about yourself
My name is Marie Mena and I am originally from PA but have lived in CO for 29 years. My husband David and I have two children. Tyler who is a programmer and Brittney who is a caseworker. I work full time at UNC and I am in college full time as well.
Why did you decide to become a CASA?
I was a foster parent for Weld County for 12 years and fostered over 65 children. Kids have always been my passion and being a voice for them is so important to me.
What do you like best about being a CASA?
Meeting the kids I get to work with and getting to know them. I know there are some kids who are very tough and will put their walls up to not trust others. I enjoy the challenge of getting to know them and gain their respect and trust.
How many CASA cases have you had?
I am on my second case and have been a CASA since October 2019. My first case was 4 children ranging from 3-14 years of age and my current case is 3 children 7-10 years old.
What has being a CASA taught you?
Never give up. You will have some children who don’t trust you and scream at you and call you whatever but don’t take it personally. Be there and show them that you are not giving up on them. Let them know you will fight for their needs and concerns and you are just a phone call away.
What keeps you motivated as a CASA?
The children keep me motivated to be their voice. To speak up for their wishes and be there for them from beginning until the end of the case
